CASCAIS PORTUGAL

CASCAIS PORTUGAL

A competition launched by ArkxSite, to create an Art Centre within the dilapidated state of the fortress wall, adjusting the project to the natural surrounding landscape and respecting the existing fortress wall. The competition site plays a prominent role, becoming the key to the proposal.
The extension respects the previous entrance of the fort to include it as the main entrance to the Art Centre. The shape of the previous construction, open to the sea and close to the road, accommodates the lobby area, cafeteria, workshop, main gallery and administration area in a volume, which goes from side to side, leaning out the wall, visible from the road.
A common layer of corten steel guides three volumes along the abrupt topography and contains the rest of the program: Lecture and performance hall, artist studios and gazer.
